Back to School, Back to Reality

Shopping: The best part of going back to school! Getting ready to head back to school. I have to admitit’s a time of emotional conflict for my family. The return of football games on a cool fall night, friends you haven’t seen in months, and the inevitable back-to-school shopping bonanzawhat is there not to be excited about?

All parents knowThe struggle is real. But I try not to be too pessimistic about the start of school. After all, we’re getting ready for the best part–back-to-school SHOPPING! When I was growing up, that was the best part of going back to school. Not even so much the clothesbut the school supplies. I can’t count the number of times I would rearrange my Prang watercolors, glue sticks, Crayola crayons and pencils in my school boxwhich of course had to be adorned with an array of unicorns and rainbows. And if I was lucky, my mom would also buy me that scented eraser that was sure to be the envy of all my friends. So yes, ok, a moment of epiphanyevery August, I live a little vicariously through my boys. They aren’t so much into scented erasers and unicorn school boxes, but they do get really excited about a trip to the store for a new bound notebook that is sure to scream sophistication to all of their classmates.

It’s a fun afternoon with opportunities to bond–as long as I don’t feel like I’m breaking the bank, which only makes me a stressed-out mad woman with a very short fuse. Thankfully, it seems the current generation isn’t like my Gen X. My kids don’t care where they’re clothes and things come from, as long as they like them and they’re making a fashion statement. They actually really enjoy thrifting and get excited to find that “great deal.” Seriously, they’ve found some great buys then relish in their achievement when they see another guy who likely paid full price.

So this back-to-school season: enjoy your journey through the stores, keep your pocketbook close, laugh with your kids, maybe even spring for that scented marker you wanted when you were 12 and keep it for yourself. It’s amazing what the smell of artificial blueberry can do when “SCHOOL” sets in.
